Medical schools like applicants that play on a varsity sports team yet can do well academically. For student athletes applying to medical school, the best advice is to pursue a clinical activity for a continuous 2+ years, pursue only 1-2 activities (research, community service, etc.), and do well in classes. Don't try to do everything. Student athletes have a very difficult schedule often with workouts and practices in the morning and the afternoons, with few hours in between for classes. Don't try to be overly ambitious and do many things but only do them for 2-3 months at a time. Stay committed to your classes, sport, clinical activity, and 1-2 non-clinical activities and you will do just great for applying to medical school.
It's interesting that many student-athletes applying for medical school play in NCAA soccer or swimming/diving. Just an interesting observation.
